How To Hold Your Drum Sticks Properly - The Matched Grip

When pupils first start having drum lessons with me we talk about holding the drum sticks properly. A good stick grip is going to allow you to play faster and with greater ease. It also allows more advanced stick techniques to be learnt later in your playing as well.

The stick grip I teach all my pupils is called the Matched Grip. It's called this because both of the hands hold the stick in the same way. The grips in both hands are matched.

This stick grip will allow you to play in a very relaxed and comfortable way. It also ensures that you don't damage your fingers or wrists as a poor stick grip might do.
