The following songs are taken from a recording I made with an old band. I have chosen to use the unmixed/first cut version of the album, without effects or vocals, as the drums are much easier to hear.
In order to record as many songs as possible all the tracks were recorded in one take and we recorded our parts in the same room at the same time (you can hear the singer in the background on some tunes).
Although these recordings only demonstrate me playing in one band (therefore only one style of music), they do feature some of my best drumming and include a few drum solos. Enjoy!

This song features an interesting up-beat ride cymbal pattern in the chorus as well as a rather cool military/Snare drum section towards the middle. Listen out for the use of double stroke and six stroke rolls within the drum fills.
* Track 2

This has a "Drum and Bass" style drum beat with lots of fast 1/6th note fills. There is also a cool little double Bass drum section at the end of the tune.
Track 3
-- Not working? Then click here. --
I chose to play in a Jazzy/Swing style for this tune with the use of cross-stick, tasty triplets and a classic Jazz Ride cymbal pattern. I liked the inclusion of the Hi-Hat "bark" as part of the chorus groove as well as the classic rock fill "Fa-Da-Lump" leading into each section.
* Track 4

The funky verses gave me a chance to use lots of ghost notes. I play a drum solo half way through the tune which consists of some of my favourite double Bass drum licks, "Dave Grohl" flams and a paradiddle idea played between Hi-Hat and Ride cymbal. The rocky chorus's demonstrate an example of how a drummer can use the Snare and Bass drum to mimic the melody.
Track 5
-- Not working? Then click here. --
Just a simple and pretty song with some tasty drum fills, double stroke rolls and a driving groove.
* Track 6
-- Not working? Then click here. --
An up-tempo and bouncy tune with an interesting 1/4 note triplet Bass drum pattern in the verses locking in with the Bass guitar. There is a trading of one bar solo's between me and the guitarist half way through for your enjoyment!
Track 7
-- Not working? Then click here. --
Short and sweet.
* Track 8
-- Not working? Then click here. --
This tune was written in 4/4 but the melody repeats every three bars giving it a really interesting feel. It features a really unique groove in the verse making it also a lot of fun to play! The chorus includes flam fills and some drum fill "set up's" leading into off-beat "band stabs".
* Track 9
-- Not working? Then click here. --
I love this guitar riff (in 6 again), it really inspired me to create an interesting groove. Lots of tom-toms and some quirky 1/4 note triplet fills and Ride cymbal patterns.
* Track 10
-- Not working? Then click here. --
This is our attempt at a Latin/Samba style tune and I relished the chance to use a Samba based Bass drum pattern during the verses. Lots of improvised ghost notes following the guitar riff, a mellow section in 3/4 and a fun break towards the end.
Track 11
-- Not working? Then click here. --
Rock! Lots of double Bass drum and some of my favourite drum fills/licks doubling up with the Bass and Guitar riff. There is another drum solo half way through as well.
* Track 12
-- Not working? Then click here. --
Another up-beat and bouncy tune with some seriously crazy Snare drum placement against the steady Hi-Hat during the main verse's...what was I thinking?! Great stuff.
* Track 13
-- Not working? Then click here. --
I live for songs like this as they really push my playing ability. This tune is "swung" and I get to use my favourite shuffle/ghost note drum groove (think Jeff Porcaro/John Bohnam) during the verses. Listen out for the up-tempo 1/4 note triplet Ride bell pattern and five-stroke rolls towards the end.
* Track 14
-- Not working? Then click here. --
This track really was fast and exciting to play! I created a unique tom based groove for the verses and a double-time beat for the chorus. There's another short trading of one bar solo's between me and the guitarist towards the middle and a quirky ending to listen out for.
Track 15
-- Not working? Then click here. --
Simply a beautiful a song and a real pleasure to play on. The chorus is in 7/4 with the drums following the melody closely. The quieter verse enjoys the use of the "stepped" Hi-Hat and you might like to listen out for the up-beat Ride bell pattern that crosses the bar during the end chorus. I enjoyed utilising the Ride cymbal bell throughout, can you tell?
The following videos are of me performing live with my old band at the Tivoli Theatre in Wimbourne. We were supporting Wishbone Ash at the time.
I feel that I must apologise for my terrible hair cut though...it was a few years ago now!
